It is inspiring and exciting to see so many new junior golfers join our Raglan Golf Club. Initially this incentive was negotiated in 2016 between myself, Theo Roodakker (Clubhouse Manager) on behalf of the club and Janis Jeffers (Sport Waikato’s District Coordinator for the Waipa District) and a member of our club. This resulted in 8 Junior Golf sets being sponsored to the club as part of their commitment to sport.
Flyers were sent to the four schools in our region, Raglan Area School, Te Uku, Te Mata and Waitetuna to determine the level of interest which encouragingly resulted in 57 children, aged between 8 and 17 showing an interest to learn golf.
A one day, four hour golf coaching session was instigated and run by Melissa Shea ( Waikato Golf Kiwisport Officer, Waikato Golf) and Jason Boobyer (SportsForce Golf Development Officer, Waikato Golf Association) under the leadership of Fiona Devonshire (the new Waikato District Coordinator for Sport Waikato. She replaced our own Janis Jeffers on this project).
They were supported by our own volunteer coaches, Peter Aim (Club President), Glenn Ragitonga, Janis Jeffers and Silas Toornstra.
This resulted in a further 6 week after school holiday programme which saw 47 new Junior Golf Memberships being signed up.
As a continuation to further nurture the keen newcomers’ golfing skills and enthusiasm our own coaches, with the help of some of the parents weekly one hour sessions were held every Wednesday up to the school holidays and have since recommenced at the start of the new 2017 school year.
Our goal is to build at least one team of juniors to represent the Raglan Golf Club in the Junior Golfing Competition circuits outside the club to promote competitive participation and to further their golfing advancement.
A big thanks to all who played their part in making this a very successful venture.
